Last month’s announcement about the leadership transition at Great Clips is a great example of how seriously we take succession planning.
As someone who works closely with our franchisees and the corporate team, I see firsthand that leadership here isn’t accidental—it’s intentional, and it’s built over years of shared experience. That’s why the news that CEO Steve Hockett will retire at the end of the year, and that current Great Clips President Rob Goggins will step into the CEO role, feels both natural and exciting.
[Take a look back at the last time this Leadership Blog covered a leadership transition—when Rhoda Olsen announced her “retirement.”]
Steve has led Great Clips since 2018, overseeing growth to more than 4,400 salons and steering the brand through the challenges of the pandemic.
He and Rob have worked side by side to strengthen communication with franchisees, expand the Great Clips app, roll out new stylist training, and continue building a brand customers trust. Thanks to their efforts, franchise revenue has grown, systemwide sales are strong, and technology continues to drive innovation across the network.
Why Succession Planning Matters One of the things I’ve learned working in franchising is that strong succession planning makes a difference far beyond the corner office. It gives everyone in the organization—whether you’re a stylist, a salon manager, or a franchisee—confidence that the brand is steady, and the future is bright.
From my perspective, what makes this moment special is the depth of leadership talent we have. We’ll miss Steve’s energy, humor, and passion for franchising, but he leaves behind a company positioned for even greater success. And knowing Rob, I can say with confidence: We’re in very good hands.
Curious about what this transition means for franchisees and the future of Great Clips? Let’s talk. I’m always happy to share how strong leadership—from Steve to Rob and the broader team—supports franchisees and helps the brand keep growing stronger. Reach out today. I’d love to talk with you
